How to Clean Out Your Garage in One Weekend

Roll-off dumpster parked at a Corpus Christi home for a garage cleanout

Everybody means to clean out the garage. Here's a realistic two-day plan for Corpus Christi homeowners — and the dumpster size that actually fits it.

The reason it never gets finished

Almost nobody fails at a garage cleanout because of the sorting. They fail at the hauling. You spend Saturday pulling everything onto the driveway, then realize it's going to take six trips to get rid of it, and by Sunday afternoon half of it goes right back in the garage. Having somewhere to put the junk from the first hour is the whole trick.

Saturday morning: empty it out

Pull everything onto the driveway. Everything — you can't make decisions about a pile you can't see. This is also when you find out what you're really dealing with: the rotted plywood behind the shelves, the box of stuff that's been wet since the last storm, the exercise equipment nobody has touched in six years. Give yourself the full morning and don't start sorting until the floor is bare.

Saturday afternoon: three piles, no fourth

Keep, go, and gone. The trap is the fourth pile — the "maybe" pile — which is just the garage reassembling itself in a different spot. If you haven't used it in two years and it isn't sentimental or seasonal, it goes. Load the "gone" pile straight into the container as you decide, so nothing has a chance to migrate back toward the house.

What size you actually need

A typical garage cleanout lands comfortably in the 15-yard at $400 — that's about 5–6 pickup-truck loads, which is more than most garages hold once you break things down. If you're clearing a garage plus a shed, an attic, or years of accumulated furniture, step up to the 20-yard at $450 for roughly 7–8 loads. Both come with delivery, pickup and a 5-day rental window.

A few things to set aside

Garages are where the odd stuff lives. Old paint, chemicals, and tires can't go in the container, and any fridge or freezer out there needs its refrigerant properly removed before it can. Scrap metal, furniture, lumber, and general junk are all fine. If you turn up something you can't place, set it aside and call us — we'd much rather answer the question than have it show up in the load.

Sunday: finish and call for pickup

Sweep it out, put back only what earned its spot, and call us when you're done. You've got the container for 5 days, but if you wrap up Sunday, call for pickup and we'll credit $25 toward your next rental. We're owner-operated and local — serving Corpus Christi, Calallen, Portland, Robstown, Ingleside, Aransas Pass, Flour Bluff, Annaville and Gregory.
